There's no doubt that both of these games are great, but after thinking about it, I reached the conclusion that RE7 was a better game, not because of RE8's flaws, but because of personal preference really. I'm still in my 1st playthrough of RE 8 but RE 7 was much better. RE 8 is extremely linear with hardly any survival horror game mechanics in it. Game's fun and the art direction is great but very far from what I'm expecting from a RE. RE7 is the better survival horror game. I'm more of an action horror person, so RE8 was more to my liking. I think 8 is better in the story, combat, puzzles, enemies, locations (variety) and house beneviento scared me the most since P.T. It also has higher highs than 7 and no lows like the last third of 7. RE7 is a better game if you're looking for more of a classic RE/Survival Horror game. RE8 is better if you want a more Action Adventure style game. Resident Evil 7 in the other hand tried to take elements from famous horror films like Evil Dead and Texas Chainsaw Massacre that it felt it was going through identity crisis. While I was never fan of RE6 story, it at least tried to develop some of its characters and have some meaning but the execution could have been better. 4DOmqI.
