Long-standing parent company Whitbread owned and operated Costa Coffee since its days as a 41-brand small chain. Then, in 2018, it was bought out by global beverage superpower Coca Cola for $4.9 billion. This buyout helped cement Costa Coffee’s already well-established position in the global market.
Costa Coffee has 4,400 locations in 31 countries, but no locations in the United States. Costa Coffee has yet to be introduced in the United States by Coca-Cola. In 2017, Coca-Cola bought Costa Coffee for £3.9 billion (or $5.1 billion). Sales grew by about 25% in 2013 and by about 11% in 2017 like-for-like.
Coca-Cola has already made its step to expanding its coffee segment by bought the U.K. coffee shop leader Costa for $5.1 million as its most significant acquisition in recent years. Back in 2016, Coca-Cola partnered with Dunkin Donuts for cold coffee drinks, launching to the ready-to-drink coffee market.
In 2009, Costa opened its 1,000th store - in Cardiff. In December 2009, Costa Coffee agreed to acquire Coffee Heaven for £36 million, adding 79 stores in central and eastern Europe. On 31st August 2018, Coca Cola paid US$4.9 billion for the Costa chain worldwide.
